you take with your Santa Fe, you will be able to drive without worries thanks
to the many safety technologies that you will find on board.
This restyling
changes the appearance of the Santa Fe quite profoundly. The new front end,
particularly loaded with chrome with its imposing new grille, differs quite
fundamentally from the previous version. However, few exterior elements have
been modified. The shields, front and rear, are new. But all body panels remain
unchanged. We see new rims appearing in the catalog,
while the rocker panels are now painted in the color of the bodywork on certain
versions, which has the effect of making the general appearance more massive.
Since the
disappearance of large sedans from the Hyundai range, the Santa Fe has served
as the brand's standard bearer. As such, it has a rather luxurious interior.
The materials appear judiciously chosen, the assemblies meticulous and the
style flattering.
On the occasion of
this restyling, the central console has been renewed. Wider and raised, it now
does without a gear lever: instead, there are keys reminiscent of what is done
on the Kona electric or the Nexo, the brand's fuel cell SUV. Several colors are
available, for a fairly warm atmosphere that has little to envy to premium
manufacturers.
A strong argument
of the Hyundai Santa Fe is its ability to keep seven seats despite the
installation of the lithium battery. And this is the case both on the hybrid
version that we are testing today and on the rechargeable hybrid, which also
appeared in the catalog on the occasion of this restyling.
The technical
modifications have been profound. To the point that Hyundai claims that this
Santa Fe is based on a new platform, which seems quite incongruous for a simple
restyling. The underbody has been modified to accommodate the battery under the
passenger seat, this also extends under the driver's seat on the plug-in hybrid
version. The modification of the base has also made it possible to improve the
habitability by modifying the layout of the seats and the bench.
The main novelty
is under the hood, with an unprecedented hybrid engine. This uses a 1.6-litre
turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder petrol engine, equipped with a
valve opening time regulation system. This block alone develops 180 hp. It is
associated with a 60 hp permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, housed in
place of the torque converter of the six-speed automatic transmission.
The set develops a cumulative power of 230 hp, for combined CO2 emissions on cycle from 144 g/km to 153 g/km depending on the finish chosen.
What surprises
from the first kilometers at the wheel of this Santa Fe is its softness? The
gear changes are imperceptible. The feeling of racing of the engine in less
during acceleration. Silence on board appears remarkable, both thanks to the
discretion of the engine and to careful sound insulation, which eliminates
aerodynamic and road noise. This mechanism also provides very suitable times
for a primarily family model.
The Santa Fe displays a fairly agile behavior for a model in this category. The steering is fairly precise, if not informative. The body roll is well contained, which makes it possible to negotiate turns without delay. On the other hand, the electronic trajectory corrector is surprisingly ticklish, and acts on the brakes well before you reach the limits of the chassis. The suspension offers an interesting compromise between comfort and body support.
