Its distinctive look combined with design and technological interior make the Corolla.
Design & dimensions of the Toyota Corolla hybrid
Decidedly more expressive than the Auris, the new Corolla is in line with the other models of the Japanese brand with much more dynamic features. Particularly reworked, the bow and stern incorporate much more rounded shapes and new optics. It is also larger. Compared to its predecessor, its overall length increases by 40 mm while its height decreases by 20 mm. Lowering the hood height by 47 mm also contributes to the sporty spirit of the sedan while improving its aerodynamics and the driver’s visibility. In its station wagon version, called the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, the Japanese hybrid is a bit longer and has a bigger trunk volume: between 581 and 598 liters compared to 313 to 361 for the sedan.
Toyota Corolla Hybrid Powertrains
Based on the TNGA platform, already used on the Prius and C-HR, the new Toyota Corolla is only available in a hybrid version in the hexagon. The compact is also the manufacturer’s first model to offer two configurations, the first based on a 1.8-liter engine with 122 horsepower, the equivalent of the Prius, and the second on a new 2.0-liter engine with 180 horsepower. In both cases, the engine used runs on petrol and the gearbox is CVT type, automatic with the continuous transmission.
However, the electric part is different on both variants. On the 122-horsepower model, only one electric unit is installed in the front, powered by a 207 V lithium-ion battery. The 180-horsepower model adds a second electric motor on the rear axle, the battery being of 216 V nickel-metal hydride technology.
Toyota Corolla Hybrid Fuel Consumption
In terms of consumption, the values announced by Toyota correspond to the correlated NEDC cycle. In mixed-use, the manufacturer claims 3.4 l/100 km for the 122 horsepower version for 76 g/km of CO2. A bit more greedy, the 180-horsepower version displays 3.8 l/100 km and 85 g/km.
Finishes and equipment
Available in five levels of finishes, including one dedicated to professionals, the Toyota Corolla hybrid is quite well equipped.
Optional electric sunroof, metallic paints, and packs are available. The Techno Pack brings for example an 8 speaker audio system, head-up display, and digital counters.
It focuses on efficiency:
Hybrid Toyota are rather known for their good efficiency level consumptions. Especially when it comes to compact cars like the Yaris or the Corolla Hybrid, which takes a good place in our real fuel consumption test of 360 km. The 3,9 l/100 km obtained at the wheel of the new Corolla 1.8 Hybrid 122 hp indeed allow the compact five-door Japanese to reach the fourth place among the non-refillable hybrids, with a distance of 25.64 km/ liter and a cost of 20.98 euros for fuel.
In short, a fuel economy guarantee that starts in the city and continues on the highway, as evidenced by the many customers who have been driving Toyota hybrids for years.
