More than 18 million Toyota Hilux has
been built since 1968, making it one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the
world. It’s an icon of the pick-up world, with owners in some of the most
inhospitable places on earth counting on its sustainability.
The last HiLux is larger in all
dimensions than before, which benefits this very important loading bay, which
is 130 mm wider than that of the old Hilux. It can also tow up to 3,200 kg – a
significant number, but behind that of the Nissan Navara.
On the inside, it’s a huge improvement
over the last model. No more fragile plastics and outdated switchgear, replaced
by a dashboard that looks like one of Toyota’s passenger cars and looks like a
passenger car.
There are a lot of hard plastics to
remind you that you’re in a pickup, but it’s now tied with the Nissan Navara
for fit and finish. The Legend model also has decent equipment, with a
seven-inch touchscreen with DAB and Bluetooth, cruise control, air conditioning,
and keyless start, while the Lounge has even more kit and a unique front part.
The power comes from a 2.4-liter diesel
engine with a high torque of 400 Nm. This is 60 Nm higher than the 3.0-liter
engine of the old version of Hilux, but it’s a little less than the high-end
engines offered by competitors.
Despite everything, despite the leaf
springs on the rear, the Hilux is surprisingly pleasant to drive. There is a
lot of tire squealing, but the ride is comfortable, the steering is precise and
the driving is not too bad considering the high position. As with any pick-up,
if the load compartment is empty, the on-road drive will be a “bouncing” may
and there is a detectable flex in the chassis.

Various exterior elements have a Black

fog lights, the front guard shoe, the door and grab handles, and the mirror
shells. In the back, the corners of the shield and the guard shoe.
Onboard, the New Hilux stands out with an
interior dressed in black, the quality of which is enhanced by chrome buttons
on the dashboard, as well as black lacquered inserts on the dashboard, the
doors, the steering wheel, the gear lever, and its turntable.
In addition to attractive dials on a
white background, the instrument cluster features a central TFT screen that
displays an animation specific to this special edition when you put the contact
on. The key itself is personalized by a drawing of the front silhouette of the
vehicle.
A more advanced set of Toyota Safety Sense* active safety devices is available on all finishes. It includes the Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) with day and night pedestrian and day cyclist detection, full-range adaptive cruise control (ACC), signal reading (RSA), and line crossing warning (LDA) with steering correction by braking. Since the Hilux is equipped with hydraulically assisted steering, the trajectory correction is achieved by light, differentiated braking on the front/rear and left/right wheels.
