Although Russian automakers cannot compete with foreign brands, they are important in the global automotive industry. During the Soviet era, they played an enormous role in the country and enjoyed great popularity. Today, according to new vehicle sales statistics, some brands of Russian cars are quite popular. Many Russian automakers are starting to develop slowly but surely.
Lada
One of the automotive players that still produce vehicles, Lada is used to being an automotive giant exporting products to the four corners of the world, including Western Europe. One of the brands that have embraced the West design since its inception, Lada enjoys a prestige that does not exist in other brands. This is a fact: Ladas are no Mercedes, BMW, or even Fiat. But their main quality does not lie in exquisite design or impressive performance. Lada is a car that simply delivers you from one place to another, offering basic maneuverability and comfort.
Not many car manufacturers around the world can claim that they continue to sell their vehicles in the same formats, that they were released 40 years before. AvtoVAZ is one of them, with identical cars about 20 million sold until 2012 The most common model, the classic 2105, was based on the 1966 Fiat 124 sedan and was highly valued for its affordable price, reliability, and unpretentious mechanics.
Lada has been a member of the Renault-Nissan alliance since the beginning of the Fiat Group. Newer models are being manufactured now and are becoming increasingly popular among Russian buyers.
Volvo
A product of the alliance between Ford and the USSR in 1932, Volga was supposed to meet the demand for luxury cars which were gradually emerging in Western Europe. The Volga model began in 1956 and succeeded in the previous Pobeda GAZ-M20.
Although far from what German or French brands have managed to achieve in terms of luxury, the vehicles built by GAZ – Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod – have been a brief reminder of Ford defined, and have presented an elegant design. Being perceived as very different from the more rudimentary Lada, Volga became a mark of wealth, bought by doctors, lawyers, and political representatives.
Until today, several series of Volga vehicles have been manufactured, the last used as taxi cars and police. Production was stopped in 2007, making the Volga now one of the models of vintage cars desirable in the world.
Zil
The Zavod Imeni Likhatchiova plant, better known by its acronym ZIL, produces Russian cars. Very few copies of the Russian car ZIL were produced. The Russian car ZIL, a Russian car manufactured between 1959 and 1967.
Mother Russia had its luxury limousines. The latter was not very famous outside the Soviet Union but they were known for their association with government representatives. Many of them were seen behind the wheel of these vehicles, which contrasted massively with the overall perception of closed of the Russian regime.
The most famous model of the Zavod Imeni Likhachova was the Zil-115, an armored vehicle used to transport dignitaries during their official travels. Joseph Stalin was one of the personalities associated with this Russian car brand.
