The main players in the 4 4 pick-up market are Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota, but other manufacturers are embarking on the game of pick-ups. Volkswagen has changed the face of the class by launching the Amarok, while the Mercedes X-Class has allowed this class to advance even more upscale. Then there are models such as the Isuzu D-Max and SsangYong Musso, which offer both a utility function and an SUV style.
The ranking of the best pick-ups:
1-Ford Ranger:
Previous versions of the Ford Ranger focused solely on practicality and usability, but the current version has somewhat obscured this perception and there is now a style that goes with the image of the workaholic. It’s closer than ever to an SUV for mechanical sophistication, but it’s built to last, has excellent all-over capacity, and can tow 3,500 kg in some forms.
In an attempt to keep its rivals at bay, Ford modernized its interior and exterior style by adding a state-of-the-art clutch and security features. The engineers also undertook to improve the driving experience through the modernization of the engine and suspensions.
The 2.2-litre, 158-hp, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine has a lot of punch, pulls smoothly, and has a lot of torque in low revs. The high-end 5-cylinder 3.2-liter is among the most powerful in the pick-up category, but it’s also noisy.
Although some efficiency improvements have been made, including the addition of stop/start on most models, none of the Ranger’s engines are covered in fuel consumption glory. The 2.2 liters can generate up to 6.5 L/100 km on the mixed cycle, resulting in CO2 emissions of 171 g/km, but this has still not been up to the capabilities of its best rivals. The 6-speed automatic gearbox runs smoothly, but increases fuel consumption to 8 liters per 100 km.
Ford manufactures single-cab, King Cab, and Double Cab versions of the Ranger, the most popular Double Cab version, offering four and five-seat seats at the King Cab’s suicide rear doors and occasional rear seats. The double cabin offers just enough legroom for a 2-meter adult to sit behind a 2-meter driver. There is enough headroom at the rear, so it is not excluded to make longer trips with four people on board.
The Ranger also performs extremely well on the road, with its double cab offering a payload of 1,199 kg and a maximum towing weight of 3,500 kg, the best in its class. Ford also added a load of state-of-the-art safety equipment, including a stability control system with trailer swing control to keep everything under control.
We were so impressed with the current Ford Ranger that we awarded it the Best Pick-up of the Year award in 2019.

2-Mitsubishi L200:
The Mitsubishi L200 is in its fifth generation and, thanks to constant improvements, it remains one of the most popular pick-ups on the market. The latest version adds a car-like technology, a distinctive style, and a long list of features, including a dual-purpose air conditioner, a touchscreen infotainment system, a lane change alarm, and electric leather seats.
The 2.4-liter diesel engine develops 178 hp and 430 Nm of muscular torque for exceptional performance and refinement. The Super Select 4 4 command allows the L200 to explore places where other pick-ups cannot get to. Stick to the asphalt and you’ll find direct steering and quiet driving while the manual transmission is light and easy to use – for a pick-up.
The intensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials in the design of the L200 allows it to reach 6.6 L/100 km on the mixed cycle. This is a good result and the generally low maintenance costs of the pick-up are combined with attractive initial prices, even on Intense models, or Black models with higher equipment.
The cabin is spacious and well designed. The small equipment starts to date and the quality of the plastics could not equip the passenger cars, but the materials are suitable for the pick-up market with some nice details added. The Super Select 4 4 control dial is located behind the gear lever and there is a large touch screen in the center of the instrument panel in more sophisticated models.
