Alfa Romeo MiTo :

The Mito does not offer enough comfort, reliability or pleasure to be one of the best choices. The fact remains that with her face, her mythical coat of arms, her joie de vivre and her pleasant presentation, she knows how to seduce.

Its handling is perfectible, as are its suspensions (jumping on irregularities), the consistency of its steering and the quality of the materials used in the cabin. But the MiTo is an Alfa Romeo, and it’s endearing. In addition to its successful and personal line, it can still claim a cheerful interior presentation, a motor map available on all models and blocks rightly cheerful, provided to opt for the most performing. Avoid TwinAir and 1.3 JTD 85 hp, as well as petrol blocks developing less than 100 hp.

Mechanics:

1.4 T-Jet Gasoline pump sometimes to be replaced. On 155 hp, engine mapping was reviewed. Coolant leak. 1.3 JTDm EGR and FAP valve concerns (fouling, power loss). Some cases of failure of turbos and broken exhaust manifolds. Leaks at the injectors. Loss of power (turbo). 1.6 JTDm They can be victims of sudden acceleration that a reprogramming suffices to eradicate. FAP (fouling) and turbo can cause power loss. Coolant leak. EGR exchanger can leak. Difficult start-up (reprogramming). Petrol/1.6 JTDm Cooling circuit subject to leaks.

Other elements:

Battery Cables changed, mainly on 1.6 JTDm (recall). Air conditioning Malfunctions. Electronics Disorders can occur (warning lights without reason, “stop & start”, ESP, injection, DNA system...). Steering Loss of assistance. Improperly mounted steering wheel (offset) and drift. Geometry to be adjusted. Noise dampers in front. Silentblocs to be replaced. Non-compliant 204/45 R 17 88W tyres, recall in February 2013 (replacement with 215/45 R 17 87W tyres).


Alfa Romeo’s sporty city car adopts a twin-cylinder engine borrowed from the Fiat 500. A heresy for traditionalists, of course, but the Italian promises to be very sober.
The small MiTo sacrifices two of its four cylinders on the altar of the CO2 hunt. His cousin, the Fiat 500, bequeaths him his 85 hp two-legged engine, a small 0.9 TwinAir Turbo that emits only 98 g/km, corresponding to a consumption of 4.3 litres per 100 km. This twin-cylinder is equipped with a Stop & Start device and develops a torque of 145 Nm... when the Dynamic mode of the DNA system, installed as standard, is activated. Otherwise, in Normal mode, it peaks at 100 Nm to better contain its thirst. A process that will surely result in a noticeable loss of vigor. The arrival of this turbo twin-cylinder also raises the question of the relevance of the 78 and 105 hp petrol four-cylinders, less coupling and more greedy, at least on paper. Eventually, these two variants could disappear from the catalogue, especially since the TwinAir will soon be upgraded to 105 hp.

At the other end of the range, the MiTo 1.4 TB 170 Quadrifoglio Verdea right to a piloted suspension developed in common with Magneti Marelli. This system is supposed to combine comfort with efficiency, constantly adapting damping laws, engine management, electronic slip protection and steering. However, diesels are not to be outdone: the 2012 vintage MiTo also offers a new version of the 1.3 JTDm, delivering 85 hp and 200 Nm of torque. It is also equipped as standard with a Stop & Start and a new injection. With 90 g of CO2/km, it benefits from the tax bonus. In addition, the interior of the small Alfa is draped with new trimmings.
